Sustainability
Kelp recycles nitrogen, phosphorus and CO2 from the sea, provides habitats for other organisms and is a source of food and feed. NSA aims to valorize the contribution to the ecosystem and will soon launch a service where you can support this ecosystem service.
The cultivation of seaweed is not a "quick fix" that solves all the environmental problems in the ocean alone. Documentation and research are needed to document the regenerative effect on the ocean and how the kelp forest can make a positive contribution to both fish farming and avoiding eutrophication from agriculture as the kelp cleans the ocean around it.
The Seaweed Cluster has a focus group ‘Sustainability’. The prioritised task for the group is to develop a monitoring program for environmental effects from kelp farms and build a new value chain for ecosystem services.
